Superhero Week at SPC Preschool – Imagination, Learning & Capes!
This week at St Peter Chanel Preschool has been full of excitement and creativity as we celebrated Superhero Week! The children fully embraced the theme, diving into imaginative role-play and learning about the everyday heroes in our communities.
🦸 Real-Life & Make-Believe Heroes
We explored what it means to be a superhero, both real and fictional. The children learned about community heroes like police officers, hospital staff, and firefighters — and talked about how each one has their own unique superpowers, such as bravery, kindness, and helping others.
We also celebrated the children’s own talents and strengths. They shared their personal superpowers, including:
Kindness
Listening
Being a good friend
🎭 Dressing Up & Creative Play
The preschool was buzzing with colour and fun as the children:
Dressed up as their favourite superheroes
Created superhero masks
Played Superhero Musical Statues
It was a brilliant way for them to express themselves, build confidence, and connect with others through imaginative play.
📖 Literacy & 📊 Maths Highlights
In literacy, the children enjoyed superhero-themed stories:
Older children read A Superhero Like You
Younger children explored Superworm
In maths, we focused on grouping and comparing amounts:
Grouping objects into 3s and 4s
Learning that even when we rearrange the groups, the total stays the same
Younger children used language like “more”, “lots” and “the same” to describe sets
These activities support early number sense and comparison skills in a hands-on way.
🔤 Little Wandle Early Phonics Focus
Our phonics sound of the week was Y — for yellow, yap (dog), and yo-yo.
We also practised oral blending, using words like:
y-a-p
b-u-s
Oral blending helps children hear and blend individual sounds in their heads, which is a crucial early reading skill.
🏠 Things to Try at Home
To keep the superhero fun going, here are two simple and meaningful activities:
🦸♀️ Create a Superhero Cape
Use an old pillowcase or t-shirt and decorate it together.
✨ Talk About Talents
Ask your child what makes each family member special. What are your superpowers?
